Susan's Biography
A few years ago, my dad shocked me and an entire boatload of family members who were floating down the Wisconsin River when he randomly yelled at the top of his lungs: "I LOVE MY LIFE!" That memory and motto will be forever etched in my mind and on my heart as I now use it to guide my life, day by day.
Though, it has not always been that way.
In December of 1996, as part of a church service, I was asked to write down an intention for the upcoming year. I asked for inner peace, the kind that resides deep in your soul, one that comforts and sustains you. Then, a year later, I received the heart stopping news that I had breast cancer. I quickly passed through denial and shock, but remained fearful for my life and my ability to parent and be a good wife for I was married and mom to three young children ages five, seven and nine.
Right after diagnosis, I vividly recalled my mom, forcefully and angrily telling me when I was a teen: "Young lady, someday you will need God." (I don’t’ remember was caused this response, but I am sure it was well deserved!) Though I had been raised in a church and even attended Catholic grade school for eight years, I really had no relationship with any of the Big Three: God, Christ or the Holy Spirit.
With those words now ringing in my ears once again, I had to admit my mom was right. The time had come where I badly needed God. Consequently, I found myself on my knees one night surrendering my total healing to Him, whatever that looked like. In turn I received spiritual, emotional and eventual physical healing AND the fulfillment of that intention I had a year prior to my diagnosis. I received an unexplainable feeling of peace and a strange desire to wear a dove necklace, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. It was only many years later did I come to know that this kind of peace is one of the gifts from the Holy Spirit.
For the next year, I contended with tubes, scars, chemotherapy, countless doctors' visits, nausea, baldness, fear, loss of hope and feelings of isolation. I also experienced clarity of priorities, purpose, fullness of life, love, friendship, support and new ways of seeing and being. Though my experience with cancer has been one of my life’s greatest challenges; it has yielded an abundance of blessings. Too numerous to name here, but will gladly share upon request.
As part of my healing journey, I was driven towards understanding how the body, mind and spirit are all integrated and how each affects personal growth and transformation. As a result of this knowledge and spiritual healing, I began to experience the world and my relationships differently. I saw and felt more of God’s magnificence, particularly when my vision was clear and my heart pure.
Prior to my cancer and becoming a mom, I was a teacher and administrator with a passion to enrich and transform lives. I love taking on the challenge of working with students and teachers who operate from a lack of confidence, negative perspectives and a fear of their greatness. I love even more seeing people transform their limiting beliefs into empowering thoughts and actions to live a more fulfilling and impactful life.
My life’s experiences, in perfect order, have led me to my present and ideal career, life coaching. I find it indescribably rewarding and exciting to inspire, support and challenge leaders to go for more in their own personal and professional growth to meet their goal and live their purpose - which is to make a difference in the lives of those around them and have a greater impact on the world.
In short, “I LOVE MY LIFE” and I thank my dad for instilling this exuberance for living on my heart. When I ask myself, “why do I love my life?” I know it is because I guide people’s steps along their unique paths to a more fulfilling, joyful and impactful life.
